Electrodeposited Hydroxyapatite-Based Biocoatings: Recent Progress and Future Challenges

Hydroxyapatite has become an important coating material for bioimplants, following the introduction of synthetic HAp in 1950s. The coatings require controlled surface roughness/porosity, adequate corrosion resistance and need to show favorable tribological behavior. deposition rate must be sufficiently fast technique needs applied at different scales on substrates having a diverse structure, composition, size, shape. A detailed overview dry wet methods is given. benefits electrodeposition include thickness morphology, ability coat wide range component size/shape ease industrial processing. Pulsed current potential techniques have provided denser more uniform metallic materials/implants. mechanism considered effect operational variables deposit properties highlighted. most recent progress field critically reviewed. Developments mineral substituted included particle, composite coatings, including those reinforced by metallic, ceramic polymeric particles; carbon nanotubes, modified graphenes, chitosan, heparin, are detail.
